Superstar of Typography - Neville Brody

STUDENT HAT!

One of the first tasks I was given this year in my Graphic Design course was to research Neville Brody, his work and fonts he designed and we were assigned to design an A3 poster.

Well, I was ecstatic to find he is huge, especially in the 80's and he is the Superstar of Typography. I love his work and has been inspired to experiment more creatively with Type.

And this is what I came up with.....

Quick Thought Hat!

I wonder if any of our kids have been taught or will be taught de Bono's 6 thinking hats technique?
Apparently it is out there, maybe not a part of the Curriculum, but maybe some Teachers have success with this idea of creative and alternative thinking and problem solving.

Hopefully our boys will at PBC next year.

My Colour Hat!

Do you have a favourite colour?

I love colour, different colours, different combinations of colours, light and dark, warm and cool, contrasts of colour, analgous colours, complementary colours, discordant colours.
There are so many colours, but all of them are combinations of the of the 3 primary colours , red, blue, yellow and varying tints and tones. These colours plus green, purple, orange/brown, make up the colours we see every day, everywhere, in books, magazines, packaging, clothes, household items etc.

I love the fact that each colour makes me feel a certain way, for example,

Red is passionate, the colour of hearts and flames. It attracts attention and actually speeds up the body's metabolism. Pink is associated with romance.
Yellow is lively and happy, the colour of sunshine and daffodils.
Orange is sunny, cheerful, warm.

Green is tranquil and pastoral, the colour of trees and grass. Bright green reminds us of spring and fertility, but it is also the colour of mildew, poison and jealously
Blue is the colour of the sky and the sea. Like green, it has a calming effect, but it's also quiet powerful.

Purple is a sophisticated colour, associated with royalty.

Brown is rich and fertile, like soil and it's also sad and wistful like the leaves in autumn. Light brown, tan and beige give fabrics and house wares a rusti, natural look, while dark brown suggests opulent hardwoods and leather.

White is the colour of purity, virginity, innocence and peace, but it's also associated with hospitals, sterility and winter.
Black is the colour of night and death, but it is also associated with wealth and elegance.

Edward De Bono's 6 Thinking Hats

How many hats do I have to juggle in one day? Seriously!!

Edward de Bono designed the Six Thinking Hats as a tool to assist in the decision making process. He believes that when the thinker has to deal with a wide range of information and perspectives at once the thinker loses focus and thinking becomes muddled.

To help separate information and perspectives de Bono created a tool called the Six Thinking Hats with each hat being a different colour. The Aim? By separating and focusing upon parts of the problem the thinker will be able to make clear choices.

Clear choices, clear thinking. You gotta like that!

Many Hats

Many hats have been juggled the last few days, Mum hat, hostess hat, friend hat, wife hat, financial controller hat, etc.

The Mum hat is stuck for the time being, fun, comfortable, necessary, filled with happiness & love. Maybe I should call it my Family hat! My hubby is always a big part of the picture too! I had a morning of Wii Fit with my daughter, I'm 24 in Wii Fit years!

It is a challenge at times to focus on my Student hat, too many hats just slip in on top first. I must make myself a cup of tea and consider some tea logos and packaging. I have taken notice of the many different tea packaging on the supermarket shelves, I suppose I would like my logo and packaging to be different and noticed, as it is an opportunity to be really creative and not just another tea package.

My daughter is terrorising our little dog Lizzy at the moment, and singing a crazy annoying song by Taylor Swift. I will have go and to save Lizzy from my daughter.

Hats!?

What hat are you wearing today? Is it your Mum hat, your Dad hat, your work hat, your student hat, your teacher hat, your happy hat, your friend hat, your sister or brother hat, your Auntie or Uncle hat? The list is probably endless and everybody's hat list will be different. How many different hats have you had on today? Many of us have different roles to juggle every day of our lives. Some of us don't even realise the change of hats, for some, our heads are spinning from the change of hats in each day! It can be a real challenge to juggle these hats!

In this blog I shall try to limit my hats, peel off the stubborn hats, chuck out the negative hats, shelve the comfortable hats, save the favourites for another time and focus on my Graphic Design Student Hat! Sometimes though, some of the hats I have juggled during the early morning, during the day, or from evening, may sneak their way into this blog, as these hats may effect the way I think or feel and how I may express myself. Usually I go with something just to get a start whether I like the idea or not and see where it takes me or where I can take it or if it actually develops a life of its own and I do love those happy accidents in design. If all else fails, I shelve it overnight and look at it differently the next day or so. Graphic Design is definitely a process.
